I am interested in the gothic identity and the representation of women. My work takes great inspiration from Pre-Raphaelite work, Romanticism, and Surrealism.
Many traditional gothic and Victorian works contain a damsel in distress that has quite misogynistic undertones. I aim to critique the representation of women by replacing the ‘damsel in distress’ with an uncanny balloon motif.
The balloon motif is a representation of myself, containing my facial features and makeup style. The balloon is also a means of de-sexualisation as it removes all curves of the female body.
I explore these themes with a variety of mediums such as photography, painting, and installation. Over the years, I have created a range of different series such as cramming the balloon in tight spaces to explore the concept of not fitting in or taking from famous gothic paintings such as ‘The Nightmare’ by Henry Fusilli.
